Rhode Island Estate

MMA, Inc. was commissioned by a longtime client to renovate the kennel of an 1890's Newport, Rhode Island estate, originally designed by Harrie T. Lindeberg, into their new home. The kennel was designed to emulate the cottages found in and around Cotswald, England and is an appropriate compliment to the estate's English manor house nearby. MMA's charge was to maintain the cottage's architectural heritage and sympathetically add and renovate to meet the project's programmatic needs. MMA's design team, lead by Anthony Frausto, conceived of matching wings, housing the Kitchen/Family areas and Master Bedroom Suite respectively, which "bookend" the original cottage and provide balance and bridge from old to new. Glass "links" were employed for spatial separation from the house proper to the new wings and incorporated transitional spaces, such as Breakfast Room and Study, that segue from formal to informal gracefully. Careful research of this architectural style and its materials, both inside and out, were key to the project's success and to preserving Mr. Lindeberg's intent and pedigree.
