Newton Residence

This project is an Addition/Renovation to a neglected 1918 Renaissance Revival style house located in the hills of Newton, Massachusetts. Our clients aspired to create a light filled, functional and elegant 21st Century home with open and flowing spaces for their family of five.

The existing 5,000 square foot structure was gutted to simplify the reorganization of space and replacement of antiquated insulation, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. Four bedrooms en suite were added to the second floor within the existing shell and a new Master Suite and Study wing was added. New Kitchen, Breakfast, Family Room and Garages were added to the first floor. The existing basement was developed with a Wine Cellar, Game Room, Children’s Media Room, Laundry Room, Storage Rooms, Dressing Room and an Exercise Room overlooking the new 2,500 square foot subterranean Natatorium with a two-lane 75’ lap pool, hot tub and showers.

The client’s appreciation of natural finished woods inspired the combination of painted wood detail contrasted with natural wood elements. Resplendent Tasmanian Myrtle floors are used throughout the house. The Kitchen island is topped with an ancient slab of African Babinga, the Kitchen cabinets are Birch, Birdseye Maple, Redwood and Mahogany are also used in this inimitable house.

The existing house and addition are unified with vocabulary, proportion, materials and color. Salvaged terra cotta roof tiles were used on the addition to successfully match the 87-year-old existing roof. Exposed rafter end details were replicated to match existing while new details and vocabulary were developed for new added forms.

Sensitive and thoughtful planting and landscaping help to add privacy and tranquility to this home located on a busy street.
