Kiawah House

MMA was asked by a Boston client to design a family vacation home along the banks of the Kiawah River in South Carolina.

The subtropical lot boasted palmettos, marsh, and ancient live oak trees. MMA carefully wove the house’s design between and around the protected oaks to marry the architecture to the landscape. The pinnacle of the home’s spaces, a roof deck, and observatory tucks perfectly into the oak’s canopies for a unique relationship with nature and commanding views of the Kiawah River.

The home’s design incorporates shingle-style architecture and indigenous materials—such as local brick, stone, hand-scraped walnut, and mahogany—to create a sophisticated low-country statement. Seamless flow from an open floor plan to private exterior spaces generates comfortable and elegant vacation living.
